This painting touches on the dark history of the government implemented genocide of Indigenous children in the Residential School system in Canada (the number in the thousands) and the devastating impact(s) of colonization on Turtle Island (North America)--as well as the Trauma of those who survived their experiences in these colonial institutions. The loss of culture and identity can be seen in the famous photograph of Thomas Moore Keesick from Muscowpetung Saulteaux First Nation. This photograph served as a reference for "The Storm".
